Matthew Emery

Grace and peace to you!  I am a progressive Christian pastor who has had the privilege of serving God and God's people as an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ since 2006 and in The United Church of Canada since 2021.

I am committed to a church that is both unashamedly Christian and unapologetically progressive and inclusive... to striving for excellence in worship leadership and preaching... to approaching the quest for meaning and faith with curiosity as well as a depth and rootedness in our historic traditions... to embodying compassion, authenticity, and care in relationships... to maintaining skillfulness and courage in leadership and administration... and to working toward the the open inclusivity and courageous witness for justice to which Christ calls us.

What I Do

 

Pastor & Congregational Leader

Served on the pastoral staff of local congregations in metro Vancouver BC, eastern Connecticut, northern Illinois, and the Washington DC area. Since April 2021, I have been serving as the Lead Minister of Cloverdale United Church in Surrey, British Columbia, a part of the metropolitan Vancouver area. This followed a 10-year tenure as Senior Minister and head-of-staff of the Storrs Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Storrs, Connecticut (immediately adjacent to the main campus of the University of Connecticut). Prior to that, I also served on pastoral staff of congregations in northern Illinois and the metro-Washington-DC area.

 

Preacher, Public Speaker, & Teacher

Thoughtful, engaging, and theologically-grounded preacher, with nearly 20 years of pulpit experience (including 15 years of near-weekly preaching). Experienced as a panelist and public speaker. Leader of educational opportunities and series on such topics as Bible 101, White Privilege and Racial Justice, Holy Communion, Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s The Cost of Discipleship, Reformation and church history, the Bible and LGBTQ+ affirmation, and more.

 

Engaged Leader & Collaborator

Active with wider church, community, and global concerns. Experience leading judicatory committees (committee on ministry, nominating, regional council approvals) and wider church event-planning and larger-meeting worship-planning projects. Have been engaged with local community groups in the areas of interfaith relations, racial justice, and university student ministries.

 

Worship Crafter & Musician

Attentive crafter of public worship and liturgy, rooted in the ecumenical liturgical traditions and familiar with a denominationally-diverse wealth of worship practices, liturgies, and resources (United Church, Presbyterian/Reformed, Lutheran, Episcopal/Anglican, etc.). Designer of quality worship aids (service leaflets/bulletins) and skilled music engraver. Self-confessed church music “geek”. Experienced choral singer (tenor) in both sacred and secular/community ensembles.
